the favourite is one of the most unique movies i've ever seen. usually when you think period piece, especially victorian era, you think stanley kubrick's 'barry lyndon'. this movie bares a key feature; slow moving, almost still cameras. but yorgos lanthimos' 'the favourite' is the complete opposite of that. sporadic cameras that almost become a character of their own, and the frequent fisheye lens shot just to reveal the absurdity of the situation.
and it is a very absurd movie. if you really think about it, it's all very silly, almost akin to playground drama. everyone acts like spoiled children (case in point, the queen), and a part that makes me especially laugh is the dancing scenes as they reminded me of the bird mating rituals you'd see on a david attenborough documentary.
more on the queen, i think it's a great decision to have the person with the most power be the least mature, and the people who serve her subtly manipulating her. olivia coleman does a perfect job (as she always does, she's probably my top 5 actresses) as this simple, naive person who has obviously been comforted her whole life and never suffered any hardships. everyone else is stellar too, and i can see why emma stone is yorgos' favourite actor as their styles complement each other so well.
overall, i think you have to have such a creative and genius mind to come up with an idea like this, let alone make it work, and it was so enjoyable as my introduction to yorgos.
