The Roses
- Just a little note. I've never read the book or seen the original movie. I have no context for the satire. I get that there are satirical elements but I think they're so slight that it's more fitting to call this a romantic comedy than what I see it called, a "satirical black comedy."
And it's not even that I don't think it explores its themes well. I think it's a believable marriage. Their interactions and passion for each other are there. I cared about them because the script did a good job of that. But outside of addressing the complications of marriage, I'm not sure where else the satire is. And I know it's trying to be there because they'll go on tangents about patriarchy or what have you, but I think they are unnecessary without being directly harmful to the pacing of the film.

Mini Review: It's not the best comedy nor romance movie, not that I didn't laugh or feel something, because I did. It's not the best satire either. But Colman and Cumberbatch were handed a script full of wit and clever barbs, and they ran with it. Such good chemistry. I was never bored watching this marriage dissolve because the script gave them a great foundation to build on top of. It's weird to say because of the subject matter, but it's just plain fun.
