Locked
Let's face it, when they offer the audience a choice between deadbeat, but well-meaning dad Bill Skarsgård or a millionaire psychopath, it's not going to be a challenging ride in regards of who has ppls sympathies. Locked offers nothing new really, it takes the psychological torture stuff from films where the protags are confined to an isolated space and are desperate to survive, it takes the little cat-and-mouse game Phone Booth and the such had to offer and casts Hopkins to be this generic sicko he plays so well, everyone recognizes his voice by now so there's no point even showing him really, but they do it anyway and it even takes a bit of the Saw franchise with the whole nothing left to lose and rediscovering a purpose in one's life themes, but aside from being watchable, it's not even trying really. No deep philosophical questions, no making us question our own morality, no surprises or clever twists, no extreme violence or gore (even for a thriller I suppose), no real emotional journey here, as opposed to Eddie, we already know what we're getting into. The most this movie will achieve is inspire some real sick f***s who already make a show of publicly humiliating petty thieves caught in the act and they'll probably take it up a notch, because let's face it: the thing that probably repulsed most ppl about Hopkins's character was that he had wealth while doing this.
