Unfortunately the overly sincere spielberg stuff does still work on me, and I was still fairly moved. looking up when spielberg got divorced for the first time also really tracked after watching this movie too. Richard Dreyfuss does what can best be described as Doing Too Much for a lot of this movie. I have to assume his performance is taken verbatim from the original A Guy Named Joe (which I have not seen) since it's the only thing that would make the performance make sense to me. Holly Hunter, Audrey Hepburn, John Goodman, and John Williams all beyond innocent and are very great here, especially Hunter and Williams. None of the sentimentality would mean anything without Hunter's performance as Dorinda and there's some really great underrated John Williams stuff here, especially Dorinda's Solo Flight. There's also still some good work by Spielberg here, especially everything with the smoke jumpers in the wildfires, so it was kind of astounding that the film treats those shots like an afterthought compared to the significantly less interesting plane shots and stunts.
