Phantasm: Ravager
This movie looks like the midway point between SyFy movies about giant monster hybrids and porn. Everything is grossly lit and the shots are unmemorable. It's an ugly movie, which doesn't seem to be caused by the limited budget. The limited budget does, however, affect the cg in this movie, which looks not great, but is reasonable for the budget.
Now that I've got my main complaint out of the way, it's hard to rate this as it feels like a very, very passionate project from the people who made it. The dementia subplot was, in my opinion, and interesting topic to include in the movie, and sets up the fact that the Tall Man and Reggie are going to go at it until Reggie dies. All in all, I can't say I liked this movie, but I didn't hate watching it, which mainly seems due to the love for the series that exudes in this movie rather than the actual quality of it.
If this is the last Phantasm movie, so be it. With Scrimm's passing, I don't think I could enjoy another Phantasm without the Tall Man, unless they somehow find another actor to do the character justice. I do think Oblivion acts as a better conclusion, as both this one and that suggest the endlessness of Reggie/Mike vs. the Tall Man, but Oblivion's serves as bringing the series into a circle with its callbacks.
What a strange series. I'm glad I finally experienced it.
