Agent Carter - Season 1
Watching every MCU media before Doomsday
Part 4: Agent Carter, ‘Season 1’
This first season defied expectations tremendously. I went into this excited to watch some cheesy 40s crime show where there are old spy gadgets and plot twists every ten minutes, but this is so much more than just that. What I really want to focus on is the casting; nearly every character is portrayed so well and compellingly that it makes this seem like a real secret agency we are watching bust a case. Everyone fits so well together; it feels like someone captured a moment in time back after World War 2.
For the plot, I explained in my Captain America review how I love this time period, and that holds, and they formulate a plot that is so concrete and concise it feels like everything is connected in such a rhythmic and natural way. It makes us question everyone and who we should really trust; the line of work we see is that we can’t even trust those name tags on the desk next to us. It overall just does a wonderful job of replicating a liberating time in the US but also one where everyone was on edge of who could be what.
I love this first season, though; nearly every aspect is done well and treated with thought and care. My only real complaint is there were too many people who were viewed as villains, and the one main villain wasn’t revealed until the last two or three episodes, so it felt like they were cramming him into almost every scene. Other than that, though, the pacing was amazing. A great first season!
