Tár
Meticulously researched and put together. The film leaves clues strewn about and makes you do the work. If you had this movie on in the background you could be forgiven for concluding it’s a long, somewhat slow, commentary on cancel culture. But that might be the least interesting thing Tár does.
Tár is a gritty biopic and a psychological thriller superimposed on each other. In the beginning you only see the latter around the edges. Stealing pills? People live-streaming her with commentary? Two apartments? Then as Lydia’s world is shaken throughout the film, the biopic facade recedes and it goes full bananas, making you wonder if the later events are happening at all. The ending feels like it’s the worst possible outcome that Lydia Tár herself could imagine, and maybe that’s exactly what it is.
