He became a star after he was discovered working as a Tokyo shop clerk by Masaki Kobayashi during the early 1950s. Later he became the favorite leading man of Akira Kurosawa after a well-publicized fallout between Kurosawa and Toshirō Mifune. Beginning in the late 1950s, he worked with a number of Japan's best-known filmmakers, starring or co-starring in five Kurosawa films and eleven Kobayashi films.

Filmed at least 3 times and now I've experienced all 3- strictly IMO: the older one didn't like much but is well regarded, the newest one is pretty "modern" and has the most appeal with spectacular action perhaps overblown. This middle retelling tries to be straight & does pretty well all things considered tho final showdown is somewhat contrived, purist in style, it's probably the best of the three but for pure entertainment perhaps pipped by the most recent - sets, costuming & acting all fine.
