Season 1 - Typical mother, Noguchi Satsuki, spends her days trying to balance her life as a wife to her hard-working husband Kazuhiko and mother to their only son Tomoya, a seemingly withdrawn fifth-grader with whom Satsuki struggles to communicate. Seiko and Ozawa Hideaki, living in the same neighborhood as the Noguchi family, are raising a rebellious junior high school daughter, Mihoko, and their first son, Kiyotaka, a second-grader who is showered with much love and affection by his mother.

The film depicts the respective stories of a perpetrator's family and a victim's family involved in a juvenile crime. Satsuki (Izumi Inamori), an ordinary housewife, is having a hard time with her fifth-grade son Tomoya (Kazunari Kazusei), who is rebellious and won't talk to her. One day, an elementary school student is murdered. The police investigation reveals that Tomoya was the murderer, and Satsuki is stunned.

Satsuki (Izumi Inamori) goes to see the police, believing that Tomoya (Kazunari Kazuhoshi) would never kill anyone. However, Tomoya flatly admits to the crime, and Satsuki is deeply hurt. The world is also informed that the murderer is a 10-year-old boy, and Seiko (Itaya Yuka), the mother of the victim Kiyotaka (Sato Shion), is stunned. Satsuki learns that Kiyotaka's memorial service is to be held, and leaves home dressed in mourning.
Satsuki (Izumi Inamori) heads to the juvenile classification home to meet Tomoya (Kazuhoshi Kakazu). Satsuki treats Tomoya kindly, but he treats her coldly and she feels pain in her heart. Meanwhile, Yoko (Misako Tanaka), a family court investigator who has been meeting with Tomoya, shows Tomoya her son's free book for a change. Tomoya opens up to her and begins to talk about the day of the incident.
Satsuki (Izumi Inamori) is saved by the kindness of Tomita (Misako Tanaka), who tells her that Tomoya (Kazuo Kazuki) invited Kiyotaka (Shion Sato) to his house to use the bathroom. Tomoya tells her that he was annoyed when Kiyotaka told him that it was strange that he did not play catch with his father. Hearing this, Satsuki and Kazuhiko (Taro Yamamoto) begin to wonder about Tomoya's true intentions.
As Yoko (Misako Tanaka) interviewed Tomoya (Kazuo Kazuki), she found out that Tomoya started to close his mind about six months ago. So Yoko, Satsuki (Izumi Inamori), and the others begin to investigate what happened to Tomoya around that time. Meanwhile, Mihoko (Umika Kawashima) finally calls out to Satsuki, who has been visiting the crime scene frequently to offer flowers.
Satsuki (Izumi Inamori) is hurt when Kiyotaka's (Shion Sato) sister Mihoko (Umika Kawashima) blames her, but Mihoko regrets blaming Satsuki. Meanwhile, her sister Ayano's (Tomoko Tabata) marriage is about to be finalized, but it collapses due to the opposition of the other party's parents. Ayano hurls harsh words at Satsuki. Meanwhile, the Ozawa family has buried their dead and tries to change their minds.
Satsuki (Izumi Inamori) again writes a letter to the Ozawa family, the victims, and entrusts it to Tomita (Misako Tanaka). Seiko (Itaya Yuka) reads the letter and her heart changes. Meanwhile, Satsuki finally meets Tomoya (Kazuhoshi Kazuno), but is too overcome with emotion to speak. Seeing Satsuki like this, Tomoya feels his mother's love and tells Tomita that he will tell her everything.
Unable to tell the truth about the incident, Tomoya (Kazuhoshi Kakazu) begins to write in the juvenile classification home's journal what happened on the day of the incident. Then, the first trial is held and the truth is finally revealed. Since the family members of the victims are not allowed to observe the trial, Seiko (Itaya Yuka) learns of the details through the trial record, and becomes interested in meeting Tomoya and Satsuki (Inamori Izumi).
Seiko (Yuka Itaya) writes a letter to Tomoya (Kazunari Kazuhoshi) at the conclusion of his trial. Upon reading the letter, Satsuki (Izumi Inamori) begins to think anew about how to rehabilitate Tomoya in the future. Satsuki and Kazuhiko (Taro Yamamoto) begin living at Satsuki's parents' house and start preparing for Tomoya's return. Meanwhile, Hideaki (Shiro Sano) is puzzled when he learns that Seiko has written a letter.
About a year after the incident, Tomoya (Kazuhoshi Kakazu) left the self-reliance center and returned home. The Ozawa family is perplexed when they learn of this. Meanwhile, Satsuki (Izumi Inamori) decides that she and Tomoya will atone for their sins for the rest of their lives. Meanwhile, in the Ozawa family, each of the three family members begins to think about the meaning of Seiki's (Shion Sato) death.
