It's charming, funny, and has heart. The kid actors are great, the step father is a believable well-intentioned fuckup. I enjoy their dogmatic distrust of authority and institutions. Young Eli was so great it made me wish they concluded the show without a timeskip. The ending is weakened by the writers bias towards one institution, journalism. The plot always would have been difficult to write an ending for, but the whodunit investigative journalist angle was a flop.

I fell madly in love with Trent Dalton's novel a few years ago and this adaptation does it justice. Translating a 500 page book into a mini-series of some seven hours gives even the minor characters plenty of room to breathe. Dalton's vision of life in a crime-ridden 1980s Brisbane suburb is often dark and violent, but the series, like the source, masterfully juggles genres, from dysfunctional family drama to coming of age comedy to magical realism, and does so in winning fashion.
