Made for "Cinéastes de notre temps" series. In 1964, several French New Wave directors try to explain its success and its crisis: Claude Chabrol, François Truffaut, Jacques Rivette, Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rozier, Jacques Demy, Agnès Varda, Jean Rouch, among others. (surrealmoviez)
First part of an over four hour documentary for TV in which Rivette visited Renoir at his country place, lunched with him, and let him talk about his work, interspersed with extracts from some of his oeuvre.
After clips remind us of the five films on which director Jean Renoir and actor Michel Simon collaborated, the two are filmed seated at a convivial table, enjoying a jovial conversation about their work together and the general topic of acting (imdb.com).
In the third part of a Cinéastes triptych on Jean Renoir, the director sits alone in a cinema analyzing scenes from La Marseillaise and The Rules of the Game, and discussing his editing and storytelling techniques.
