Confession

1998
Documentary
TV Mini-Series
Originally a five-part semi-documentary series on Russian television, this scaled down release tells the story of a Russian naval commander in charge of an Arctic-based ship. The film reveals the daily duties associated with the ship, but it is really about solitude and isolation. Voice-over narration by the commander, other sailors, and even a third-person voice provide the "confession" of the title.

(Viewed on 01/14): A stylised quasi-documentary where the effect of being trapped in a highly restricted space for extended periods borders on cabin fever; the suffocating confinement is central to its humanism. The Russian title Povinnost ('forced labour') gives an insight into Sokurov's concerns: capturing young bodies in atmospheric low light conditions diligently performing their duties on a mission towards a destination unknown, surrounded by arctic bleakness. It's mournful and moving.
