Dry run for ELEPHANT, context more intelligible as Troubles but scarcely more reliant on conventional signposts, style less rigorous but still abstracted in striking ways. Considering certain developments, the soldiers shot in nightvision w/ none wearing nightvision goggles seems like a prescient Brechtian device, looking forward to '20s Korine (who's cited Clarke's influence as formative). Perhaps surprising for Clarke, taken from a book by an actual British Army man, which I've ordered :)
