Demon Slayer reads like Simone Weil’s essay on force made literal: its demons are people hollowed out by power until only hunger remains. Against them stands Tanjiro, whose uncanny sense of smell works as Weil’s “attention,” the rare ability to perceive another’s suffering. The show’s richness lies in a hero who mourns what he must kill. It’s a gorgeous, serious work, limited only by pity that hardens into formula and violence too beautiful to see clearly. - Full Review
