A feel-bad knitted brow take on solemn lore and a brooding, sulky protagonist. It presents interesting moral decisions and tragic fates that ultimately feel void of emotional gravitas, because the characters are only there to serve the story. A tragedy of a human is meaningless if you know nothing of how their everyday character is. You first have to build a fleshed out character who interacts with the story. Not a puppet that the story is superimposed upon.
