It's such a basic kids' movie plot - how did they do it so *weird*!? Scenes start and end for no reason, the narrator gets a bunch of scenes yet barely interacts with the actual plot, the siblings have a constant uncomfortable romantic vibe, the story wants to indoctrinate you into a UFO cult, and please don't make Robert Vaughn say "Daddy's home!" like that! Most movies with this much failure of craft are trying to be artsy, but this was just trying to be an ABC Family Movie - what happened!?
