In this film, there is a scene where Fred is monologging to us and his mother angrily "are you pretending you're in a movie or something?" To this point it is assumed he was breaking the forth wall and stepping outside of the film - but in fact what has been happening is that he is talking to a self-delusion, an imagined audience watching his every move, judging him and feeding his neuroses.This is why he's so hyper and never calms down! He must live up to his delusion expectations, a
