Roger Corman resumes his celluloid relationship with Russia -- an alliance that dates back to the early '60s, when he purchased a Soviet space epic and proceeded to construct several films (e.g. _Planet of Blood_) around its more spectacular footage -- in this decently mounted attempt to recapture the gothic grandeur of his Poe pics of yore. While Cross may be no Vincent Price, Garland *is* still Garland, and it's good to see the former feisty '50s femme fiend-fighter in a meaty fright-film role
