Hajime and his friends were gathered as test subjects—both guests and part-time workers—at a ski resort under construction. This was a place steeped in the legend of the Snow Demon, who was said to have brutally slaughtered and devoured every villager.
It was the middle of the night at a large hospital. As Dr. Kashiwagi was pushing a stretcher, a nurse called out to him. Kashiwagi, who was off duty, explained to the nurse that he had come to check on the patient in Room 205—who had no family—but that there was nothing he could do.
At first, Inspector Kenmochi arrives at the Samejima Gym with Miyuki. The gym had received a challenge letter from the Gentleman Thief stating, “At 5:00 p.m. today, I will take the gold medal of former weightlifter Susumu Samejima.”
While Hajime was tidying up the room with Miyuki, a telegram arrived. It was news that Marika Tsukie had passed away. Six years ago, Hajime, then in fifth grade, had participated in a Cub Scout camp. Miyuki, who had caught a cold, did not attend that camp. During the camp, ten people, including Hajime, became stranded.
