If they submit this for the Emmys it will win every award. From the games, it deviates and expands, elevating the material. For prestige TV, it’s a flashpoint cultural moment, creating a space of conversation and empathy. It’s also damn well shot and acted and breathes as a straight character piece. That open window, as a symbol for what came before and lies ahead, is magnificent.

This is easily the best episode of the entire first season. It is unique in that it deviates from the trek of our main characters enough to mostly feature the backstory of two side characters, who still prove crucial to the overall quest. The tenderness of that piano scene is incredible. The love story between Bill and Frank is the show's most effective storyline. It isn't overdone or melodramatic. A small oasis of humanity in the midst of an apocalypse.
