In Ken Russell's modern interpretation of Arrigo Borito's Il Mefestefele, Faust is an ageing hippy. He smokes marijuana and is tormented by his lost youth. Mephisto makes a bet with God that he can turn anyone to pagan life, even someone as innocent as Faust. From then on it is a battle of good against evil in a flamboyant, surreal display of primary colours, PVC costumes, nurses with swastikas, rocket trips, love and even characters dressed as Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse.

Not good, for so many reasons. Boito was not a good composer, and didn't even write particularly well for the voice. The cast is undistinguished, except for Paata Burchuladze, who is marvelous. The chorus is incompetent, the orchestra little better, and the conductor can't keep anyone together. The RAI folks had no idea where to point the camera most of the time. Russell's direction...what can one say? Fascinatingly bad. He (willfully) misses the point most of time. But it keeps your interest!
