The kids' movie subgenre of "anthropomorphizing random stuff" has always been rife with dark implications. But I don't think I've seen one as cheerfully, thoughtlessly dark as this, where it's frank about the joylessness of being in a box in the attic, about how aging leads to abandonment, how even when Noel is found again he's old and ruined... I'm sure this was supposed to make the "happiness" shine brighter, but all it did was make kids like me afraid of mistreating inanimate objects.
