Turning the novel into a series to an extent amplifies the soap opera element, but this is still quite well done, and the best parts do pack something of a punch. If we take it as a kind of fable of South American history, then are we entitled to wonder if the indigenous population has pretty much been erased from that history, and whether this might not be a blind spot somewhat characteristic of South American leftist politics in general?
