I found this magnificent. One of the few things I've seen recently that I continue to think about. Cumberbatch, of course, is aces. Berger's direction is also cleverly subtle and consistently effective. A place for everything and everything in its place: it's difficult to prune aspects for criticism. Each episode is uniquely paced but convincingly connected and the adaptations are smart and cohesive. Really enjoyed this.

A hard watch at times, slow at times, confusing at times, but certainly worth it overall. This tale of trauma and suffering somehow manages to be human and lively in the process.

Brilliantly constructed and produced series could have benefited from some minor pruning, but its hard to decide what to leave out; Melrose's evolution from hilariously strung-out coke addict to unhappy high society rebel (with a painful but fascinating back-story) is beautifully charted by Berger's fine direction and marvelous work from Cumberbatch; Leigh and Weaving are equally fine as his venal parents. Considerably more thought provoking and complex than the first episode suggests!
