There's a lot of unforgivable sloppiness in the presentation, particularly the camerawork which drops to below student film levels at times, but the story is just so good and a handful of extremely good performances (Hopkins at the forefront) let it rise above its visual failings.

Hopkins as the purportedly wronged doctor and Gazzara as the writer are both superb. Ending is stunning.

I am not sure that this story warrants six and a half hours. It also reiterates the "getting rich in Hollywood writing scripts" fantasy, recalling the old joke about the Polish actress who slept with the screenwriter to get ahead. Nonetheless, this is good for what it is, with strong material and an all-star cast giving it their all
