Later he took roles that went against his initial "tough guy" image. In the late 1950s Lancaster abandoned his "all-American" image and came to be regarded as one of the best actors of his generation. In typical TV movie fashion, this flick builds up a ton of melodrama, but doesn't manage to really make a whole lot of sense. Lancaster has plenty of dirt on Urich without ever using Reed, so it's puzzling that he would spend a small fortune to get her and then not use her for anything. The story ends with a "money corrupts" moral that doesn't make much sense since it requires Lancaster to conspire to keep an employee that he has zero use for.
