Masterpiece theater productions like this often have the feel of Cliff notes, dutiful summaries of literary classics that allow you to fake having read them, but this one is better than most. It wisely dispenses with the hackneyed Hackett and Goodrich play the 1959 film was based on and goes directly to the original diaries. Ellie Kendrick as Anne Frank is captivating.
