"A science of dreams! Well, well, well." So says Mr Holmes upon hearing from Dr Watson about the nascent science of psychoanalysis. Unfortunately, this interesting thread does no run through the rest of the film. Instead we are subjected to a melancholic and stupefied Sherlock which is never fun for anyone - a Sherlock deprived of his reason is left with nothing to offer - and a wishy-washy mixing of dream and reality that does justice to neither the former nor the latter.
