Watching this felt like I was watching a very dark feature-length episode of 'Midsomer Murders', only it takes place in the 19th Century and all the characters are fully drawn as opposed to being cardboard cut-outs. It's interesting to see and hear Mr Holmes almost experience a breakdown in the confidence of his own rationality. The use of pan flute music to make clear the Peruvian roots of Carlotta and Dolores was a bit much, but Richard Dempsey as the crippled Jack was entirely convincing.
