Christopher Reed's poem 'The Song of Lunch' is brought to life. The story is a classic male tragedy, of a drunken middle-aged man whose awareness of his own increasing unattractiveness is a self-fulfilling prophesy; but the observation and psychology are razor sharp, and the words clear and cutting. Rickman's extraordinary chance to shine as full-blown leading man is essentially the whole show here, though Reid's very clever adaptation of his touching, amusing and utimately devastatingly poignant prose is also superb. Thompson provides expert support, but it is Rickman's show and he delivers, in a very quiet, contained, but exceptional piece of visual and aural poetry.

Poetry on screen, literally. This and A.Rickman are two main reasons to see it.
