Garland's novel centers on a young nicotine-addicted traveler named Richard, an avid pop-culture buff with a particular love for video games and Vietnam War movies. While at a hotel in Bangkok, he finds a map left by his strange, whacked-out neighbor, who just committed suicide. The map supposedly leads to a legendary island paradise where some other wayward souls have settled. (imdb)

If you look upon 'Shutter Island' as 'Leonardo DiCaprio meets an old psychologist friend on the street' then 'The Beach' is 'Leonardo DiCaprio goes surfing'. I don't know what I'm trying to say with that. What a horrible review this is turning out to be. Virginie! Marry me!

A confused film that left me confused, but not entirely bored. It's a strange universe where the characters are so contradictory and surprisingly uncaring about actions ("sure mate, we'll come to a remote and possibly dangerous tropical island with you and you can fuck my girlfriend. I won't care") And how many movies set in a tropical island have a Banjo Kazooie themed montage? I don't know what to make of it. But it's Danny Boyle, at his worst, but still better than some at their best.

A surprising good film with an amazing soundtrack. Some visually beautiful shots of the beach. Admittedly it does feel like a slightly updated Lord of the Flies with adults but it's still quite a good movie.

I had a great fun watching this one. Mainly because it reminded me so much of my present circumstances and this little community of people I am living with. That tab of acid probably helped too, as I'm still not sure if this film really is as trippy as it seemed. The story is really good. It a sort of bittersweet romantic fable for dreamers, drugies, lovers. It surpassed any expectations I had, and my timing to watch it was just perfect.

Good beginning, good ending, kinda boring in between. It's more suitable for a novel because it tries to show how the characters change, but become boring comparing to its fascinating beginning. It's like a adult version of lord of the flies.

Idiots being idiots. Assholes being assholes. People being people. Weirdly upbeat ending though. Like he came back from some crazy amusement park adventure. As opposed to a crazy fucked up amusement park adventure, where you eventually become a psychopath and then find out the owner of the park wants to murder you, which totally kills the mood, so everyone goes home.

Seen: 2. Uneven and unlikeable. The first half isn't bad, despite being full of itself. It's a unique adventure, with some strong opinions about the modern world. The jungle commando freak out in the second half sets things off the deep end. This is probably my least favorite DiCaprio performance ever, and maybe that's the material's fault. He is committed, but he is also all over the place. Speaking of all over the place, the tone takes you for a ride, to put it politely.

A couple thinks short of meaningful social or psychological commentary, but the seeds are there. Wonder if the book is any better at exploring the psychological toll of self-sufficiency or the rumblings of colonialism allegory that a couple scenes touch on. The Angelo Badalamenti score was a pleasant surprise.

I have a weird relationship with this film, I haven't watched it up to now, but its soundtrack was such a big deal when I was young, that I know it by heart nearly. It is an original "coming of age" story with a nice drug-driven tempo to it. Swinton is particularly impressive and the island itself is breathtaking. In the end, it makes a very strong point on living with the consequences of your decisions and the difficulty of escaping from life; not a personal favorite but it is worth watching.

Works as well as it does thanks to Boyle's striking director's eye – DiCaprio's spaced-out, pretentious narration is almost laughable at times, but it's hard to deny the film is a captivating visual journey, with the island a gorgeous location and the brief ventures into city night life seductive and appealing. It's a shame that the movie has nary an idea in its mind, or even a particularly clear or compelling perspective on this material. Enjoyable enough on the very superficial visual level.

Would have been so much better if it had been Ewan McGregor as originally planned instead of Leo, and if they'd stuck to the book where he doesn't get laid at all. You end up disliking Richard because DiCaprio plays him as arrogant and loud whereas in the novel he's a sympathetic (and pathetic) nerd. Too bad because the premise, the setting and the soundtrack are all pretty great.

A fascinating and under appropriated film that has beautiful cinematography and use Thailand and the mythical 'beach' as backdrops for a less than perfect 'Heart of Darkness' allusions and that paradise is only paradise until people stop following the proscribed 'rules' for which humans invariable do. DiCaprio is decent as is Robert Carlyle. Really worth checking out this underrated film.

The problem comes with the inevitable collapse of Richard's life on the beach, and his constant references to the fate that would befall his life. It's rare that a film would so overtly tell you that bad things were going to happen and the plot becomes messy and convoluted about halfway through, a problem that really sours the beauty of the first half.

The story is intriguing and the locales are pretty, but after the second half of the movie, the script starts to fast-forward the plot. The whole going mental phase of DiCaprio seems a bit far fetched, since he wasn't, at the time, quite capable as an actor to carry the heavier scenes. In the end, The Beach is confusing, it's hard to tell if it's a thriller or a feel good movie and the message it's supposedly trying to convey is somewhat ambiguous.

Great first act which kind of falls apart in the second. Boyle has a lot of great tricks up his sleeve which aid the feel of exploration, but when shit has to get real he puts a lot of pressure on Leo - and he doesn't pull it off nearly as well as would be required. The plot gets put into overdrive after the second act leading to a stunted and rushed climax. Good use of music too. The characters are the main issue - they don't seem likable enough at the start to show a descent into immorality.

The Beach is a frustrating watch paired with luscious scenery throughout. Boyle's pacing is quite slow as you can feel the 2hr runtime, and the characters are often annoying. While the film does start to go off the rails (and not in a good way) in the 3rd act, the ending reins it in and is a decent conclusion. The themes are 'Lord of the Flies'-esque but slightly more cynical. DiCaprio's narration throughout became grating. The film definitely has its moments, and a good soundtrack.

Walk into a backpackers and you'll find the same mob as the stereotypes that parade around in this mixed-sex Lord of the Flies. Boyle's one lone misfire isn't as bad as some would have you believe, but it's certainly not near as good as it should be. The book is infinitely better, and Garland should have written the screenplay himself. His messages remain mostly intact, but while I agree with them, the film has an air about it -- it just seems pompous and shallow. Carlyle and Swinton give memorable performances, and the soundtrack and locations are excellent. It just could have been so much more.
