Alegory of the suppression of the 1919 revolution and the advent of fascism in Hungary; in the countryside, a unit of the revolutionary army spares the life of father Vargha, a fanatical priest. He comes back and leads massacres. A new force, represented by Feher, apparently avanges the people, but only to impose a different, more refined and effective kind of repression. (Francisco Baez)

A formalist precursor to Jancso's films with folk songs about peasant uprisings, Agnus dei lies somewhere between The Red and the White and Electra, My Love, pointing to a future characterised by longer, more complex takes and intricate staging and choreography. It resembles a play shot on an open field, and the villagers being subject to the cruel whims of corrupt and violent authority figures is somewhat reminiscent of Salo. As an exploration of fascism, it builds a certain amount of power.
