Early on in Wayne's diversification, this is his very first contemporary, non-military role. Being the early 50's I use the word contemporary loosely, because viewed through the lense of the 21st century, this movie is all kinds of dated. It also tackles a theme that modern audiences with no historical references might have a hard time grasping. In the subsequent seventy years, reasons to watch "Big Jim McLain" have vanished like the Red Scare.
