A remake of the James Cagney film The Mayor of Hell (1933) with Humphrey Bogart taking the Cagney spot in this one. Not a bad replacement! But with that said, I prefer the Cagney version. Bogart comes across too soft here and it's lacking the more unpredictability of a Cagney performance. The Dead End Kids clown around a little, but this is mostly a moral story so it's the drama that takes the stage. A little too obvious getting to the pay-off, but a good movie overall.
