Em honra do centenário de Goffredo Lombardo, produziu um punhado de obras-primas de gente como Petri, Visconti, Zurlini, Fellini, Olmi, Matarazzo e até Aldrich. Não pude deixar de sentir esse filme como uma espécie de Clube da Luta old school da meia idade, em termos de pensar o capitalismo existencialmente e de como não há escapatória ao trabalhador que precisa sobreviver a não ser a morte. The film took on a task too difficult to execute, and the result, while not bad, doesn't capture Cesare's reflections efficiently or believably enough. However, I feel that the subject matter had lots of potential, and that's why the subsequent disappointment with its treatment was somewhat inevitable.

Salvo Randone was a fantastic and prolific actor, but it's a rare treat to see him in a starring role (well, he didn't have the looks of a Mastroianni or Tognazzi). The film doesn't have anything like the philosophical inquiry or polemical conviction that I expected it to. Cesare's trauma of witnessing death in all its meaninglessness raises an existential conundrum for which we expect a meaningful solution, or at least a magnificent struggle for one, but are we even owed one?
