Il Successo

This is a very rare filme and a valuable one. In spite of the often visited theme of fortune against happiness, this movie approaches it uniquely, with a very impressive participation of the actors and clever dialogues.

italian '60s movies are still unbeatable

"The Success" shows the kind of personnel depth peculiar to old Italian cinema: It's directed by an unknown, but with the uncredited input of Dino Risi, a knockout script by Ettore Scola and Ruggero Maccari, and a first-rate cast led by Vittorio Gassman. It's about a guy who will stop at nothing to "get rich quick", his comical meetings with colorfully slimy characters he expects to get money from, and what he ends up sacrificing in the process. A bit of a morality play, perhaps, but beautiful.
