Jan Kadar again tackles a Jewish theme: Ted Allan's reminiscence of his youth in 20s Montreal, when he was torn between his warm, old-fashioned grandfather (Yossi Yadin) and his obnoxious, scheming father (Len Birman). The Oscar-nominated script is hampered by thin characters, uneven technical quality, and a grating performance from Jeffrey Lynas in the lead. But the sincerity is hard to resist, Yadin is excellent, and there are many fine vignettes--including the amazingly beautiful final shot.
