Very slow and understated, with very little dialogue but creates a strong picture of the character's bleak and lonely lives.

Although Escalante is a protege of Carlos Reygadas, here he's basically mainlining Bruno Dumont, Michael Haneke and Elephant-era Gus Van Sant, which for better or worse more or less tells you exactly what to expect. While he fortunately shies away from Reygadas' increasingly pretentious mysticism, he practically revels in Dumont and Haneke's glacial miserablism, which may be a fair trade off depending on one's taste. I'll say, for what it is it's quite well made even if it's been done before.
