Mayday

It's the Wizard of Oz--as a feminist fairy tale set in a matriarchy where there's a fine line between sociopaths and heroes. The director creates a dreamlike atmosphere that allows our hero to escape her abusive job by going to a fantastical land where information slowly reveals itself. Van patten is amazing--showing a range of emotion and philosophical consternation. And the music, editing, and photography add to a feel that had me smiling at the pure joy. One of my favorites of the year.
