After the not-so-successful collaboration between Bruce Cabot & Tommy Ryan in Tenth Avenue Kid (1938), Republic Pictures decided to try again with Mickey the Kid (1939), this time making good use of Cabot's more unsympathetic personality as a murderous father sending his kid to stay with his grandmother while running away from the cops. This worked better. Helped that they got Jessie Ralph & Zasu Pitts to take care of kid, giving this a more balanced emotional experience.
