I watched the German language version, Ein Lied geht um die Welt (1933), a couple of years ago, and didn't like it much. But maybe the story is growing on me as I get more into it this time. Or perhaps it's simply better in English. It's still about a opera "midget" in Venice who teaches us that size does matter. Doesn't matter if one has got the greatest voice in town. You'll still lose the girl to your mediocre normal sized sidekick. I almost feel sorry for the slightly creepy Joseph Schmidt.
