Richard Wright's novels are famous in France. When he had to escape from his native land in the McCarthy years he lived in Sartre's and Camus' country .So it was only natural that the first version of his "native son" was filmed by a French.Pierre Chenal was not a beginner when he made "Native Son" aka " Sangre Negra"-it was actually made in Argentina. Not only Wright adapted his own novel but he also played the part of Bigger.

I give this a passing grade because some of the twists and turns still work today and I like the plot. Also, the context of when this was released makes it important and adds some seriousness to it. But the reason it almost fails is because the acting and dialogue are so bad that I actually laughed sometimes. You shouldn't laugh at this. It seriously almost tanks the entire experience.

Native Son (1951) is a very rough movie with a lot of ambition on a shoestring budget. A lot of interesting shots being made by Pierre Chenal. Highly skilled director who here had to work beyond the limits of the production. Interestingly it stars the man that actually wrote the novel, Richard Wright, for a story that's still being remade to this day. Many criticize his acting, but for a amateur I felt he did well. Does try hard and there actually are several really good scenes in this.
