A little girl is kidnapped by the Mafia in revenge for her father's help in capturing one of the mobsters. She is presumed dead, but in reality is spirited away to Italy, where she is raised as the daughter of a kindly couple. When she is betrothed to the cruel padrone, she disguises herself as a boy and stows away to America, where she finds herself once again in the clutches of the mobster who originally kidnapped her. One of Mary's lesser films, but still enjoyable. Fun watching her dress and act as a boy. Also as a minor and almost meaningless note; Brother & sister Jack & Mary Pickford play brother & sister in this movie! Mary Pickford is still the queen on the screen even if she doesn't get the close-ups and time to develop a clear personality as she would in her more famous films, and that's the point. This is prototype Pickford adjusting her act to later perfection.
