Don't think I've ever seen John Barrymore work with worse material than this. He still makes some use of this hokum, but there's a reason Romance in the Dark (1938) doesn't get as much distribution as his other films. The actual top-billing goes to Gladys Swarthout, a opera singer who didn't quite reach screen stardom. The third party here was John Boles, while wasn't on top of his game, at least had fun with this. Almost seemed like a in-joke between them to ham it up several notches.
