Not the perfect William Powell film, but it's captivating nonetheless. Powell is a gambler with a wife that demands that he quit. But as he's considering retirement from the gambling scene, up turns his brother Regis Toomey, also hit with the gambling kick. Thats why Powell wants to teach him a lesson to stop him gambling so that he don't turn out like him. This movie got an Oscar nomination for Best Writing and I guess it's the story which is the most impressive part of this early talkie.

Pretty heavy-handed moralizing about the ills of gambling. Powell is, as usual, quite classy, and Kay Francis makes a pretty good long-suffering wife, but the story is a little thin. (There are far too many terrible clearly-not-shot-in-NY scenes as well.)
