Well crafted portrait of Avant and his godfather-like influence on popular culture is more fascinating for its overview of black pop culture, from the 60s through to the 90s. An impressive and eclectic array of talking heads are a perfect guide through this hefty collage of historical material, with Avant himself emerging as an avuncular head-kicker; his on-camera stoushes with a bemused Jones are just one of this engrossing film's highlights.
