The Demon

Like the work of Haneke and Noe, this movie is masterful in the way it makes you despair for mankind. You try to comfort yourself by saying things like this don't really happen. But of course they do. Even if they don't happen that often, it provides a glimpse into the darker side of humanity, the evil impulses in all of us. Ken Ogata has just enough of a conscience to make him real, Shima Iwashita is a little too nasty to take seriously. Good use of music and some fine cinematography.

One of Japan's obscurest masterpieces. An absolute horror, because it is all too plausible, hinting all the while that its social normalcy makes us complicit in its common madness. You feel a little bit of your soul escape by the film's end.

Bleak, bleak, bleak... the synopsis here is just the opening, the movie principally deals with what happens after, to the dad, his angry and bitter wife and the three abandoned children. Somewhat overwrought esp regarding the wife role and I couldn't engage with it like the makers intended. Mostly well acted (the very young children do well also). Can get especially tense.Set in icky sticky ultra sweaty high summer when tempers are short.
