Not every overly-disparate idea that Bonello crams into his debut film necessarily works, and overall it's probably his least distinctive film, but certain glimmers of his better work to come manage to shine through. I get what he's trying to do here, even if the juxtaposition between a pretentious hack porn director and the failure of post-May '68 political ideals is a little clumsy, and seriously what was the deal supposed to be with the son's storyline anyway?
