I was very surprised by this. It was good.

huston is good, film is little seen but decent. and oh peter weller is in it, too. been a while since I saw it, needs a rewatch.

A weak effort. Most of the scenes are watchable, but the story is devoid of meaning and none of the characters hold any interest. The parade of self-involved egotistical characters could be seen as a satirical put-down of the Hollywood film industry, but as usual, Bernard Rose seems interested only in the superficial vices of hot actresses, classical music and experimental camerawork. Any serious movie needs to have more depth than that, a lot more. Probably not what Tolstoy intended.

Remarkable film, with a familiar premise: the rise and fall of a drug-fuelled maniac who's lost control before they know it. And yet it stands alone based on Rose's sleek photography, and the way that events are related through expertly structured montage (that I think seizes on something important about editing).

Amazing performance from Danny Huston.
