Share Your Favorite Double Features

Post by Mentaculus »

I really love double-features and go out of my way to watch as many as possible. In most cases, it adds value to both the weird, unappreciated films and the ones we've seen a hundred or so times. The people here on Criticker know their stuff, and I haven't been as creative as I used to be recently, so I figured we could create a place to share the best film combos possible - and in a way, get some fun film recommendations.

Share your most insightful, fun, or downright bizarre double features (preferably ones you've tried. No one has ever done Bambi and The Deer Hunter. If you have, please correct me). BUT, also share the common thread that you think unites the two. So they're not completely random.

Here are a few of my personal favorites to start the conversation:

The Others / The Innocents (Victorian Horror)
Pillow Talk / Down With Love (Pastel RomComs)
The Hurt Locker / Beau Travail (Women-directed war films)
Antichrist / Possession (Marriage Disintegration)
Ghost Rider / Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (Nic Cage/Eva Mendes love interest)

Just a few:

Monsieur Hire/A Short Film About Love (Voyeurism)

Antares/Amores perros (Very similar structure, and dogs seem to factor in to both)

Deathbed/Death Bed: The Bed That Eats (Bad movies about evil beds)

Betty Blue/Turkish Delight (Highly sexual, sort of similar story)

Blind Beast/Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (Sense-obsession)

Factory Girl/I Shot Andy Warhol (Women who were displeased with Andy Warhol)

The Lovers/Le Bonheur (Two French movies about adultery, one focused on the wife and the other on the husband)

The Shootist/Gran Torino (Very similar story)

I Spit On Your Grave/Eden Lake (Vengeful women in a similar setting, but with different circumstances and outcomes)

The Vanishing (original)/Breakdown (Similar story, different execution)

The Manitou/Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare (Insane horror movies with insane endings)

Hannibal/The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (Cannibal cuisine)

OMG why would you do that to yourself? :o

Ahem, last week we did The Happening (with Rifftrax)/Birdemic (laughably shitty eco-horror)

Some others from the past:

1990: The Bronx Warriors/The Warriors (retro-future gang warfare in NY)

The Goonies/Monster Squad (good 80's adventure movies about kids)

The Indian Runner/A History of Violence (Viggo gone wild)

X: The Man with X-Ray Eyes/The 4D Man (incredible new powers....too powerful)

Darby O'Gill & the Little People/Something Wicked This Way Comes (fun and surprisingly scary old Disney movies)

Village of the Damned/The Bad Seed (evil kids)

Denise Calls Up/The Daytrippers (Liev Schreiber as a wallflower in 90's indies)

New Jack City/Deep Cover (early 90's drug bust movies)

Miller's Crossing/Goodfellas (the twin mob movies of 1991)

Freaks/Human Nature (characters hemmed in by society's perceptions of them and their flaws)

A Fish Called Wanda/Quick Change (awesome heist comedies)

Brainstorm/Strange Days (alternate uses for the same technology)

Barton Fink/The Big Crimewave (insane movies about writer's block)

The Believers/The Serpent and the Rainbow (you come get the voodoo)

All About Eve/Opening Night/All About My Mother (3 films about trust, performance, femininity, and connections, each building on the previous films' themes)

The Host & Cloverfield (wacky monsters on a rampage)
RoboCop & Terminator (evil machines on a rampage)
Predator & Aliens (monstrous aliens on a rampage...sensing a theme?)

finally, one of my personal fave double bills, even though there isn't really a connection:
UHF & Rosemary's Baby....somehow they just fit.
